Required for our 3-Day “Great River School” program is membership in “Mason’s Alveary,” Charlotte Mason Institute’s online curriculum, offered to all Great River families at a reduced rate of 159.00/year. This curriculum is a 21st century version of the programs and schedules that Charlotte Mason set for her Parents’ Union Schools in the early 1900s. Great care has been taken in the creation of this material to maintain Mason’s choice of living books, short lessons, and a person-honoring regimen that alternates between inspirational and disciplinary subjects.
In this program, students ages 6-9 and 10-12 rotate in small groups through Alveary lessons at Great River on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. On Mondays and Fridays, students work at home under their parents’ supervision on materials from the Alveary.
The word “alveary” refers to “a repository of knowledge or information” according to the Oxford Dictionary. It comes from the Latin word for “beehive.” In Miss Mason’s day, the practicing school on the grounds of the teachers’ college she founded was referred to as “The Beehive” as it was housed a hexagonal-shaped building .

In support of keeping learning on a human scale, Great River is spreading our offerings over four days instead of three for the upcoming 2016-2017 school year.
Instead of Wednesday being our only day for our one-day program, families will sign up for EITHER Mondays OR Thursdays next year, depending on whether they also have 5-yr-olds attending the Play-K on Mondays, or Upper School students (ages 12 and beyond) attending up to three classes on Thursdays.
Families who desire their children to attend our three-day program would then come for EITHER Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays OR Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.
Stay tuned for more details in the make for next year!
GREAT RIVER LEARNING announces the addition of “Great River School” beginning Fall 2015: half day instruction in numeracy, literacy, and oracy on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Whether your family is interested in 1) supplementing home instruction in these areas, 2) having the stage set for instruction at home in these subjects, or 3) more consistent group instructional experiences for your age 6-10 year old children, contact Director Lisa Cadora at firstname.lastname@example.org.
