“Mason’s Alveary”

Required for our 3-Day “Great River School” program is membership in “Mason’s Alveary,” Charlotte Mason Institute’s online curriculum, offered to all Great River families at a reduced rate of 159.00/year. This curriculum is a 21st century version of the programs and schedules that Charlotte Mason set for her Parents’ Union Schools in the early 1900s. Great care has been taken in the creation of this material to maintain Mason’s choice of living books, short lessons, and a person-honoring regimen that alternates between  inspirational and disciplinary subjects.

In this program, students ages 6-9 and 10-12 rotate in small groups through Alveary lessons at Great River on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. On Mondays and Fridays, students work at home under their parents’  supervision on materials from the Alveary.

The word “alveary” refers to “a repository of knowledge or information” according to the Oxford Dictionary. It comes from the Latin word for “beehive.” In Miss Mason’s day, the practicing school on the grounds of the teachers’ college she founded was referred to as “The Beehive” as it was housed a hexagonal-shaped building .
